Pick and Roll

While reading Playing for Keeps by David Halberstam, I came across this gem about Reggie Theus. Theus was a star player for the Chicago Bulls from '78-'84. Not only was "Rush Street Reggie" a party animal, his nick name coming from his active social life on Rush Street, he also had a a bit of a 'tude on the court:

"On occasion, Theus waved a towel over his head to incite the the crowd to take his side, and once he apparently ordered pizza from the bench during a game" (Halberstam 110).

It's really too bad that the NBA wasn't covered by the media like it is today because I'm sure this would be an amazing clip to watch. My question is, though, how did he order the pizza from the bench without a cell phone?
